Coming soon: the LiveWhale Users Group

Now that we have launched LiveWhale, it is time to start a users group to share answers, ideas, support, etc. (like we had with Trillium). There will also be an associated list-serv available to any LiveWhale user in the Lewis & Clark College community.

Who will help us?

So, when Boot asked about training, it brought up another great change that we’ve been working on for the next generation of our web site. To understand, you might need a little history in case you haven’t personally experienced this.

From it’s inception, Trillium has been and still is managed by New Media, but depends upon the access accounts managed by IT. This has always created a disconnect. There were some things that IT couldn’t do, and some things that New Media couldn’t do. This meant that the average person never knew who to call, and while we became good at referring people back and forth, it always ended up in a more circuitous route to get a simple thing done for the end-user.

So, starting with LiveWhale (LW), New Media and IT Client Services will jointly manage LW — essentially, all ten of us are admins in our new system and will be able to help you with most any request you have. While there are a few things (see below) that New Media will still have to help with, almost all general questions and help will be handled by whomever you ask.

New Media is really appreciative that IT Client Services is joining us on this adventure and we’re looking forward to working together.

Things that require New Media:

  1. If you want to create a brand new site never before in existence, talk to anyone in New Media.
  2. If you want something to exist at the root of the web server, e.g.: www.lclark.edu/something or law.lclark.edu/something, you need to get the the Director of New Media’s consent.
  3. If you want a custom template, you will most likely require New Media’s help to build it.

Everything else, including user/group management and permissions, help using the system and working with your content, can be handled by any of us. If we find things down the road to add to this list, or means by which we find that we can allocate out more responsibility, we’ll update you.

Will there be training for LiveWhale?

Morgan recently wrote a post on the redesign blog about all the different types of content/pages that we currently have on the Lewis & Clark website and Boot chimed in with some concerns about training. He asked:

Good to know that most content will just transfer over - but what about generating whole new pages which we in APP do at the rate of roughly 1/week? When do you envision training staff on how to use/update/create/publish pages in Live whale? Or is it just so easy that training would be silly?

Well, if you’ve used any blogging software or other types of web apps recently, then yes — LiveWhale will be just that easy. But, for those who haven’t or perhaps like you Boot, they’re heavy users that want to get all the nitty-gritty of what the system is capable, there is training available.

Group Training Sessions
In fact, we’re partnering with IT Client Services to help us manage LiveWhale and being experts in user training, Kelly Wainwright is going to be leading six 90-minute training sessions over the course of late April to early June. Here’s the present schedule:

Tuesday-April 21, 10-11:30am,  Watzek Library Classroom  (rm 245)
Tuesday-April 28, 12:15-1:45pm, South Conference Center rm. 107
Thursday-May 7, 3-4:30pm, Watzek Library Classroom (rm. 245)
Friday-May 15, 10-11:30am, Watzek Library Classroom (rm. 245)
Wednesday-May 27, 1:30-3pm, South Conference Center rm. 107
Tuesday-June 9, 9-10:30am, Watzek Library Classroom (rm. 245)

(We also have this on our redesign calendar at Google.)

To sign up, contact Leslie Wagner at wagner@lclark.edu or call #7229. They’ll be limiting the number per class to about 20 so that everyone has a good chance to see and get questions answered. If some of these times don’t work for you, or you want to get a large group training for your entire office, contact Kelly to arrange something special.

Self-Taught Training
For those of you that prefer a self-taught method, Morgan is also going to be creating some online screencasts of how to do some of the most frequently performed tasks in LiveWhale. He’s just starting to create them, but we’ll be sure to post them as soon as they’re ready.
