The participants, ranging in age from 18 to 80, represented multiple tribes including Nez Perce, Yakama, Lakota and Shoshone-Bannock.

The storytelling workshop was funded by a National Native Master Artist Initiative grant from the Longhouse Education and Cultural Center at The Evergreen State College. The Longhouse’s support is made possible by the Ford Foundation’s IllumiNation Program, which was established to strengthen Native arts and cultures throughout the United States.

During the workshop series, workshop participants and Lewis & Clark campus community members journeyed down the Columbia Gorge to the famous Native American rock art known as “She Who Watches.”

The workshop series culminated in a public performance where the storytellers demonstrated at least one traditional legend and explained how it relates to the work they do and how they will incorporate storytelling into their everyday work.

In the following video, IWOK Coordinator Se-ah-dom Edmo explains the purpose of the IWOK program.

On April 23-24, Lewis & Clark Law School and the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program hosted legal and energy leaders from across the country at a conference, Greening the Grid: Building a Legal Framework for Carbon Neutrality. They met to discuss the laws needed to support the growth of low- or no-carbon energy sources for the power transmission grid. More than 50 participants from government agencies, energy companies, environmental nonprofits,, and law firms attended sessions that looked at renewable energy, clean coal technology, and nuclear power.

Janice Weis, Associate Dean and Director of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program, said the conference was groundbreaking given its comprehensive scope.

“The conference moved beyond a discussion of climate change and its causes and tackled the issue of how alternative or renewable energy sources might be used to ‘green the grid,’” Weis said. “The conference looked at the economic, legal, and technical issues involved in employing a variety of different energy sources and, in doing so, allowed us to gain an appreciation for the very complex issues involved in climate change.”

Speakers addressed a wide spectrum of energy sources including ocean wave, nuclear, coal, solar, and wind, as well as the federal and state regulatory landscape that contributes to or impedes renewable energy development.

“It was clear that the speakers have been spending time in their positions giving great thought as to how all sectors—academic, private, government, and non-profit—might contribute to a better understanding of how to address climate change.”

In this video, conference participants share their motives for attending and the rolls they each play toward Greening the Grid.

A small group of students set out on a quest to develop an conference to address a series of serious questions facing the international community about the rules of war, who participates in war and how war is covered. The International Affairs Symposium, A World of Warfare: Dynamics of Conflict, brings together well-known international affairs pundits to discuss some of the most pressing and complex questions to come out of the Iraq War.

This symposium is one of four organized by undergraduate students at Lewis & Clark annually addressing a cross-section of social and political issues. International Affairs Symposium 2009 co-chair Brad Elkins ‘09 discusses the symposium theme and topics.

Why did you choose war as a theme for this year’s symposium?

My co-chair Elspeth Cordua and I agreed that previous symposia had fairly strong humanitarian/soft power foci–a notably popular subject amongst Lewis & Clark students and community members. Being the good International Relations students that we are, we thought it was important that the community be exposed to discussions that were perhaps outside their immediate interests that could perhaps spark tension and debate–in a word, conflict. Thus, we decided that we wanted this year’s symposium to focus on “hard power” issues such as security and power.

As the committee continued to research the topic, we found our group interests’ coagulating around the idea of “modern warfare” and what wars will look like and how they will be fought in the years to come.

Why do you feel that international conflict is an especially salient subject right now?

We are currently in the midst of a real sea change in how we as a society look at and fight wars. There are those who claim that Great Power wars, as we knew them in the 20th century, are outdated and that the concept of a conventional standing military force is no longer necessary in our world, while there are others who point to conflicts such as those in Iraq or Afghanistan and see these asymmetric conflicts as only slight deviations from the standard model of engagement.

Regardless of how one views the current state of world conflict, most will agree that war is an inevitable part of human nature, and thus is an important area of study at any period of time.

Who do you think should attend?

This year’s symposium is an excellent opportunity for all members of the Lewis & Clark and Portland communities to learn from those with first-hand experiences about the future of warfare. Given this campus and community’s proclivity towards topics on a more humanitarian end of the spectrum, this is a fantastic opportunity for those who know little or who have simply not been exposed to such a topic to learn a great deal about a subject that is unfortunately pushed to the wayside on this campus.

The symposium sessions however, are not all just about strategy, guns, and ammo, but instead take on various aspects of modern warfare that should appeal to a wide range of audiences.

The symposium focuses on the dynamics of modern conflict, including questions about the privatization of security forces, the notion of preemptive war, and the efficacy of embedded journalists. What do you hope those in attendance will gain from this expansive view of contemporary conflict?

I think that this sort of topic is often overlooked on this campus, and that students and community members here will gain a great deal of insight into the various facets of warfare; fascinating topics that often conceived as too traditional or too “realist” for our campus.

Watch an interview on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart featuring symposium speaker Thomas Ricks, military correspondent for the Washington Post and author of The Gamble:General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008. Ricks will speak along with journalist Phillip Knightley on Tuesday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in a session titled Black and White and Read All Over: Embedding Journalists with Modern Warriors.

Given what you’ve learned as an International Affairs major, what do you think will be the main source of international conflict during your lifetime?

While I am the first to admit that my just budding knowledge of international relations prevents me from making predictions of any worthy merit, from what I’ve learned and seen I think that wars and international conflict will continue to exist as they have throughout history, and that while we may consider our societies “advanced” or “modern”, you cannot escape human nature. There will always be those who are willing to undertake a war of conquest. Today we may redefine it as a fight to protect or gain resources. And there will always be those who fight for ideas, political or religious. While the ways and means of fighting these wars are sure to change, there is no escaping that conflict is an inevitable part of who we are. While I know I cannot predict where the next hot spot for conflict will be, I can say with some degree of certainty that we are by no means past the point of engaged conflict, and there is sure to be many wars throughout my lifetime.

Greg Smith, professor of teacher education, has received a $19,380 grant from the Gray Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation to train teachers in the West Linn School District on environmental issues. The Environmental Education Program seeks to encourage a strong local land ethic, sustainable communities, and stewardship of the natural environment by citizens throughout Oregon. The Fund is committed long term to institutionalizing a series of age-appropriate experiences that build a sense of place and responsibility towards Oregon and the region.

The Sustainability Education Initiative is a program of professional development coursework and activities for K-12 teachers in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. During three courses offered in 2009, Smith will prepare 50-60 teachers to incorporate sustainability issues into their classrooms and help them implement school or community projects that will enhance local natural and social environments. Participants will be eligible for small seed grants to fund start-up projects. The grant aims to increase the number of teachers implementing sustainability projects in schools, and increase student and educator awareness of local natural systems, ecologies, and social needs.

With one of the country’s most robust programs for Third Culture Kids (TCKs) and Global Nomads, Lewis & Clark takes pride in its commitment to international students. Today, approximately 120 international students from six continents and more than 44 countries study on campus.

Bringing unique international perspectives into the classroom, student groups, and the larger campus community, TCKs and Global Nomads expand and energize the college’s global awareness.

To document their experiences and share their views of the world, junior Andrea Liamzon and first-year student Remy Neymarc have harnessed their passion for photography to stunning results.

Remy Neymarc

Neymarc, who was born in Chicago and grew up outside of Paris, shares his story and some of his favorite images in the following video slideshow.

Andrea Liamzon

Born in Manila, Philippines, Liamzon has visited 22 countries. In the following slideshow, she shares the journey that brought her to Lewis & Clark and offers some the most memorable photos she’s taken along the way.
<a href="http://media.lclark.edu/media/news_images/andrea_liamzon/1_nokubo.jpg" rel="lightbox[Liamzon]" title="Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, junior Andrea Liamzon thrives on adventure. After a grueling selection process, she received a United World College (UWC) scholarship to Lester B. Pearson College in British Columbia, Canada.

Four Lewis & Clark Law School students advanced to the final round at the 6th annual National Animal Law Competitions at Harvard Law School this month.

“Our moot court teams performed magnificently against tough competitors, and we are equally proud of our closing argument competitors,” said Pamela Frasch, executive director of the Center for Animal Law Studies. “Judges went out of their way to commended our students for being so well-prepared and articulate.”

Bryan Telegin and Carey Whitehead advanced to the final round of the Appellate Moot Court Competition and won the prize for Best Respondent Brief.

Annmarie Robustelli advanced to become one of only four finalists in the Closing Argument Competition.

“Our coaches, Kathy Hessler and Pamela Frasch, spent an enormous amount of time helping us develop our arguments and understand the finer points of the problem,” Telegin said. “As well, many Lewis & Clark faculty and staff volunteered to coach our rounds and pushed us very hard. I am willing to bet that no other team had as much community-wide involvement leading up to the competition.”

In preparing for the competition, students must have a thorough understanding of the law and the ability to articulate the long-term ramifications of applying a particular ruling.
They also learn different techniques of persuasion than those used when arguing to a jury. While a jury may be persuaded by passion and may ignore the law altogether, an appellate tribunal is primarily motivated by factors such as policy considerations and strong legal precedent.

“The competition gave me an incredible opportunity to enhance my advocacy skills,” Robustelli said. “Not only did I gain a deeper understanding of the law and the judicial process, but the feedback I received from the judges was invaluable.”

In 2008, Lewis & Clark took the championship in the National Center for Animal Law’s National Animal Advocacy Moot Court Competition. Erin Smith and Lauren Goldberg won the competition, with Smith receiving the Best Oralist award. PEAC clinical professor Allison LaPlante served as lead coach for the animal law moot court teams.

In this video, Kathy Hessler, director and clinical professor of the Animal Law Clinic, discusses the ways Lewis & Clark students prepared for this year’s National Animal Law Competition.

For more than a quarter of a century, Lewis & Clark College students have dedicated a portion of their student fees to support the work of their peers. The program, managed by the Student Academic Affairs Board (SAAB), provides grants to students to attend conferences, conduct research, bring scholars to campus, and support student art projects. Recent recipients have traveled to places like Costa Rica and China, attended national academic conferences, and hosted speakers on international conflict.

“I think SAAB reflects the level of curiosity at Lewis & Clark,” said senior Ben Brysacz, SAAB chair. “It shows students’ willingness and enthusiasm for helping out other students.”

In this video, Brysacz and two student participants, seniors Katie Walter and Luke Wheeler, discuss the program. This fall, Walter received a SAAB grant to host journalists from the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting at a campus event in November. Wheeler’s SAAB grant allowed him to travel to China last summer to study the rise of student nationalism ahead of the Beijing Olympics. Watch the video to learn more about SAAB and to hear the students share their thoughts about what it offers to the community.
