Dennis Chang Named Student Commencement Speaker
Fifteen years ago, Dennis Chang was graduating from MIT with a major in Chemical Engineering. His early academic experience led him to a very successful career in the high-tech industry. In 2006, Dennis decided to resign his position at Intel in order to be a stay-at-home dad for his son, Calvin. It was during this period of re-evaluation and self-assessment that teaching called his name. Dennis will address his fellow students at Commencement on June 7.
Justice Anthony Kennedy Annual Lecture Series
The Justice Anthony Kennedy annual lecture series will lead off with a talk by Kathleen Sullivan, the former dean of Stanford Law School and a partner at the law firm of Quinn Emanuel. Dean Sullivan is one of the country’s leading scholars on the Supreme Court and is also a well respected oral advocate before the Court. Dean Sullivan will be speaking on campus in September, 2009. The lecture series is designed to promote discussion of cutting edge issues affecting the U.S. Supreme Court and the Constitution. The program was established with the approval of Justice Kennedy when he visited the law school in the Fall of 2008.
Hon. Betty Roberts Women in the Law Program
Hon. Betty Roberts ‘66 is the author of “With Grit and By Grace- Breaking Trails in Politics and Law: A Memoir,” which focuses on her rise from a Depression-era childhood on the Texas plains to become a teacher, lawyer, state legislator, candidate for governor, and eventually Oregon’s first woman Supreme Court Justice. Join us for the inaugural Hon. Betty Roberts Women in the Law program: “Listening to the Past, Working for the Future- Celebrating Women in the Law”.
11th Annual Joyce Ann Harpole Awards & Reception
Oregon Secretary of State (and Lewis & Clark Law School Graduate) Kate Brown was Guest Speaker at our annual Harpole Awards & Reception with a talk entitled “The Sanity Game: Balancing Your Life and the Law”. Sarah Troutt was presented with the Harpole Award, recognizing a lawyer who is dedicated to the pursuit of justice while maintaining a sense of balance among career, family, and community. The Harpole Scholarship was awarded to current law school student Natasha Richmond, for demonstrating those qualities along with a dedication to legal studies. Law Student asked to present at the Midwest Political Science Association
Current Law School student Stephen Raher will be presenting his paper entitled “Judicial Review of Legislative Procedure: Determining Who Determines the Rules of Proceedings” at the Midwest Political Science Association’s spring conference this April. Stephen’s interest in the topic comes from the 5 years he spent lobbying at the Colorado state legislature. Read his paper here.
Prof. Johnson, Distinguished Speaker
Jeffrey Bain Scholar and Professor of Law Jennifer Johnson was a featured speaker last spring in the Distinguished Speaker Series at American University’s Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. A specialist in corporate law who frequently appears as an expert witness in cases around the country, Professor Johnson presented a paper entitled: “Arbitration of Shareholder Claims: Why Change is not Always a Measure of Progress.”

Commencement 2008
The Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling’s 24th commencement ceremony will be held Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the Pamplin Sports Center. Highly regarded family therapist and author Chris Crutcher (pictured) will deliver the address. On May 31, he will also lead a workshop called “What Works with Kids.“
