Nedc Latest Victory for Northwest Environmental Defense Center

Following threatened legal action from Lewis & Clark’s Northwest Environmental Defense Center for allegedly violating federal clean water laws by allowing pollution from scrap metal operations to flow into the Willamette River, Schnitzer Steel Industries has promised to spend one point six million dollars upgrading stormwater management systems by the end of the summer. “It is impressive to see that Schnitzer is willing to move forward so aggressively with this much-needed […] investment in this challenging economic climate,” said Mark Riskedahl, Executive Director of the NEDC.

Danb Kench Lewis & Clark Attracts Top Scholars and Teachers In Legal Analysis and Writing.

Our highly ranked Legal Analysis and Writing department has drawn national attention with its innovative Distinguished Visitor in Legal Writing project. Each year, the school invites a leading figure in Legal Analysis and Writing to teach a semester in our first year Law program. As well as teaching, the Visitor is actively engaged in scholarship and directly contributes to the life of the school. The program’s first Visitor, Ken Chestek of Indiana University, visited for the 2009 Spring Semester. Boston College’s Dan Barnett will be our second Visitor next fall. Kathleensullivan Justice Anthony Kennedy Annual Lecture Series

The Justice Anthony Kennedy annual lecture series will lead off with a talk by Kathleen Sullivan, the former dean of Stanford Law School and a partner at the law firm of Quinn Emanuel. Dean Sullivan is one of the country’s leading scholars on the Supreme Court and is also a well respected oral advocate before the Court. Dean Sullivan will be speaking on campus in September, 2009. The lecture series is designed to promote discussion of cutting edge issues affecting the U.S. Supreme Court and the Constitution. The program was established with the approval of Justice Kennedy when he visited the law school in the Fall of 2008.

The Grid Greening Greening the Grid Conference

National legal and industry experts recently convened at Lewis & Clark to discuss the laws we need to support the growth of low- or no-carbon energy sources for the power transmission grid. Bettyroberts Hon. Betty Roberts Women in the Law Program

Hon. Betty Roberts ‘66 is the author of “With Grit and By Grace- Breaking Trails in Politics and Law: A Memoir,” which focuses on her rise from a Depression-era childhood on the Texas plains to become a teacher, lawyer, state legislator, candidate for governor, and eventually Oregon’s first woman Supreme Court Justice. Join us for the inaugural Hon. Betty Roberts Women in the Law program: “Listening to the Past, Working for the Future- Celebrating Women in the Law”.

Kate Brown Harpole 11th Annual Joyce Ann Harpole Awards & Reception

Oregon Secretary of State (and Lewis & Clark Law School Graduate) Kate Brown was Guest Speaker at our annual Harpole Awards & Reception with a talk entitled “The Sanity Game: Balancing Your Life and the Law”. Sarah Troutt was presented with the Harpole Award, recognizing a lawyer who is dedicated to the pursuit of justice while maintaining a sense of balance among career, family, and community. The Harpole Scholarship was awarded to current law school student Natasha Richmond, for demonstrating those qualities along with a dedication to legal studies. Moot Court Winners Wide Latest in a Tradition of Moot Court Victories

Law students Tarah Heinzen, Erica Maharg, and Lizzy Zultoski, triumphed over 67 other teams and won the Pace National Environmental Moot Court Championship. Along the way, this year’s team bested teams from Harvard, the University of Colorado, and the University of Utah, among others. This is the second year in a row that Lewis & Clark has won this prestigious championship, and the 6th time in 16 years. We have also made the finals (top 3) on five other occasions. Our Environmental Law Moot Court Program has been a breeding ground for outstanding lawyers and advocates and all the members of this year’s team have set a standard of excellence that will inspire those to come.

Romano Spotlight Roberta Lecture: Higgins Distinguished Visitor in Residence

Lewis & Clark Law School invites you to a lecture by our 2009 Distinguished Higgins Visitor, Professor Roberta Romano: The Uncertain Future of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Professor Romano is the Oscar M. Ruebhausen Professor of Law and Director of the Yale Law School Center for the Study of Corporate Law. Her research focuses on state competition for corporate charters, the political economy of takeover regulation, shareholder litigation, institutional investor activism in corporate governance, and the regulation of financial instruments and securities markets. Amphitheater-6090 First Ever Joint JD/LLM Degree in Environmental Law

Lewis & Clark Law School is pleased to announce the launch of a new joint J.D. /LL.M. degree program in environmental law — the only joint J.D./LL.M. program in environmental law in the nation. The joint degree is designed for Lewis & Clark law students who would like to obtain both a J.D. degree and a post-graduate LL.M. degree in Environmental and Natural Resources Law.
