Amir ElSaffar and his sextet meld styles and seamlessly cross-pollinate the languages of ancient and modern, East and West. ElSaffar’s compositions are some of the first in the history of jazz to make use of Arabic modality and its non-western tunings.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Lewis & Clark College Department of Music, Portland State University Middle East Studies Center, and the Arab-American Cultural Center of Oregon.
Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for students and senior citizens, $15 for general admission. A limited number of free tickets are available to the Lewis & Clark community in the music department office.
The concert is in Evans Auditorium, at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26.

This event is part of a lecture series hosted by Lewis & Clark Graduate School’s Center for Continuing Studies: “The Global Becomes Local; Fostering Healing and Understanding.”
Dr. Libal and Dr. Harding will discuss their research on the politics of humanitarian assistance and advocacy for Iraqi refugees as published in the Middle East Report. Refreshments will be provided after the event.
Kathryn Libal, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies and the School of Social Work at the University of Connecticut.
Scott Harding, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Community Organization at the School of Social Work, University of Connecticut.

A new exhibit on the human and economic cost of the Iraq war to Oregon will be on display on the Glade, March 3. The exhibit consists of a memorial to those who have lost their lives in the Iraq War, including boots to honor the fallen soldiers from Oregon, hardhats to represent the Oregon contractors killed in Iraq, and a display that recognizes Iraqis who have died in the war.
