Miller links the Doctrine of Discovery to both Thomas Jefferson and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, stating that "Lewis and Clark were not out there by accident. They were making geopolitical claims." Miller, author of "Native America, Discovered and Conquered: Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and Manifest Destiny" (Praeger Publishers, 2006), is a citizen of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, where he serves on the Circle of Tribal Advisers  to the National Committee of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial.
