Four students receive awards at Toyama Cup
Four undergraduates received awards at the Toyama Cup speech contest, a state-wide Japanese language competition sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Oregon.
In the Division One competition, which includes competitors with one year or less of formal language study, Aaron Kim ‘09 received first place, while Kiersi Burkhart ‘09 took home third. Sarah Gordon ‘10 received an Award of Encouragement. In Division Two, where students with two or more years of formal study compete, sophomore Lisa Tsubouchi received third place.
Six undergraduates receive Fulbright Awards
A record six seniors received Fulbright Awards this spring.
Recipients include Ian Hooper (teaching award, Germany), Katie Loebner (teaching award, Indonesia), Matthew Nelson (teaching award, Russia), Brandon Nichter (research award, Chile), Kate Phillips (teaching award, Thailand), and Katherine Spingarn (teaching award, Germany).

Assistant Professor Dorothy Aguilera examines language immersion models
Dorothy Aguilera, assistant professor of educational leadership:
In March, Aguilera presented “Restoring and Preserving Indigenous Languages: Three Indigenous Communities’ Successes with Language Immersion Models” at the American Education Research Association conference in New York. Aguilera’s presentation analyzed the language immersion models that are meant to revitalize and preserve the native languages of indigenous communities in grades K-12.
Associate Professor of Theatre Stepan Simek receives Year on Stage award
Stepan Simek, associate professor of theatre:
During the spring, Simek received the Year on Stage award from the City Paper of Baltimore, Maryland for his authorized translation of Vaclav Havel’s “The Increased Difficulty of Concentration.”
