Other HigherEd websites
- 20 May 2008
It can be interesting to see how others in higher ed are doing things on the web, since the challenges campus web designers face are similar on many levels. One site that is a central hub for showcasing College/University web design is edustyle.net and they are in the middle of their people’s choice awards, so check out the contenders in a variety of categories, and if you run across something that you think is fabulous, or something that you think is horrible, drop us a line in the comments.

How’s about a look at local schools?? University of Portland’s site caught my eye today. Nice and clean. I like how the homepage can only get so small or so big; it doesn’t stretch no collapse too much.
Portland State’s site is also good, but it
bothers me that it’s not centered (though neither is ours), and it’s interesting they chose to have no stretching or collapsing at all. Clicking around, you’ll find they offer a lot of simple bullet-list pages to funnel people quickly to interior content. It’s helpful, but not attractive.
Both sites have random photos come up in the main header, like ours. And interestingly, both sites have an affinity for rounded corners on colored boxes.
University of Oregon in Portland’s site mimics the main Oregon pages, with a sickly overdose of green for my taste. They do not offer a random header image, and things seem a little text-heavy.
Reed’s homepage has a Flash slideshow of some great professional photos in their header. A lot of sites seem to go for the Flash slideshow; I personally do not like them. This header however is beautifully done, particularly the background lettering. Very “academic”-looking. They have chosen a locked-size to their site, but it is centered.
I didn’t talk about what they have all done with their left and top menu links, but that’s a whole different conversation, and I’ve typed enough here already!
