RSS Feeds
- 6 November 2007
While they’ve always been available for this blog, I’ve just added links to the sidebar for the main blog RSS feed and the comments RSS feed and a whole bunch of subscription links. That way, you can add the feeds to your favorite news reader/aggregator.
For those of you that don’t know about RSS, it stands for Really Simple Syndication, and allows for easy sharing information. (Robb can provide more on the format if you’re interested.)
In case you need a different RSS format, here are all the feed links:

I love this idea, from the standpoint of someone who might benefit from it. Information is slow to move through campus, especially when it’s coming in through many (often very different) doors. The ability, e.g., for the Grad School web manager to grab relevant news tagged in Campus Connections would make it much easier for information to flow almost automatically. You mention a defined set of tags, which seems like a good starting place. What might these look like? Would it be easy to add/remove them as the perhaps become obsolete?
The possibilities for RSS are almost endless. I have seen some very useful stuff done with it, though probably the most useful is the Safari 3 Mac “Clip It” turning pages into widgets so you can see when pages are updated. Awesome.
Anyway, like Hanna says, we need a better way to turn calendar data into useful information. RSS could be a road to accomplishing that.
Rss and proper implementation are critical, just having it does not do very much for you. A coupe of plugins for wordpress are available, such as feedburnerfeedsmith wich logs all possible rss feeds to your single feedburner account. This helps you track better by having a repository for all subscriptions in one place.
